Emily Good-Perkins selected as Top Music Educator and Owner of the Year by IAOTP

Emily Good-Perkins, Business Owner and Music Educator, was recently selected as Top Music Educator and Owner of the Year for 2024 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to the industry.

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself; only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. All Honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With more than a decade and a half of experience in the industry, Ms. Good-Perkins has certainly proven herself as an expert in her field.  As a dynamic, results driven leader, Ms. Good-Perkins is the Owner and Director of The Music Playhouse, which offers early childhood music education and primary/secondary music classes.

Emily is passionate about providing high-quality music education for children and adults of diverse backgrounds and abilities. She oversees the curriculum and educational philosophy of the music school, which is based on research and experience teaching all ages throughout the world. She has been leading the music school for over a year and a half and has expanded its offerings to include primary and secondary music classes.

Emily was recently awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award In Education and Business and is honored to be the Keynote Speaker at the Education 2.0 UAE conference in Dubai in February 2024 at which she will accept her award. At the conference she will also be speaking in two additional sessions and holding an exhibition booth at which she will be discussing her recent book, “Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies in Music Education: Expanding Culturally Responsive Teaching to Sustain Diverse Musical Cultures and Identities.” She also recently was awarded the “Global Icon” award by the Internationally reknown, luxury magazine, Passion Vista, and recognized as an honored member of the Worldwide Women’s Association.  

As owner of The Music Playhouse, a school for early childhood music education in Carmel Indiana, and Dissertation Supervisor for Boston University Doctoral students, Emily is grateful to be immersed in music teaching, learning and research from multiple vantage points, all of which inform the other. She was honored to be the keynote speaker for the New York Teachers’ Association in May 2023. 

Most recently, Emily became Director of Educational Programming for Congolese refugees in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi refugee camps for the non-profit Grace Vision. She is in the early stages of a partnership with the Playing for Change Foundation and her newly-formed non-profit, Hand in Hand Music Foundation to work with local Congolese to implement music and other educational programming in these camps. She will be traveling there in February 2024 to commence this project. 

Emily has presented, performed and taught in the United States, Cuba, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Azerbaijan, England, China, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

She has published in the International Journal of Music Education, Philosophy of Music Education Review and contributed to the book Humane Music Education for the Common Good published by Indiana University Press. Her book entitled, “Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies in Music Education: Expanding Culturally Responsive Teaching to Sustain Diverse Musical Cultures and Identities,” was published by Routledge in 2021 and recently became available in paperback. 

Most recently, her book chapter entitled “The Sounds of Hope: Music Homeplaces and Compassionate, Abolitionist Music Teaching” was published in the Oxford Handbook of Care in Music Education. Her book chapter on culturally sustaining vocal pedagogy is in the works and will be published in Dr. Jeanne Goffi-Fynn’s edited  book on student-centered voice pedagogy for The National Association of Teachers of Singing. 

Emily’s areas of expertise include but are not limited to university teaching, curriculum development, lecturing, educational research, grant writing, and qualitative research.

Before embarking on her career path, Emily received her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and Master of Education (Ed.M.) degrees in Music Education from Columbia University in New York City. She also received Master of Music (M.M.) and Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degrees in Voice Performance from the University of Arizona and Temple University.   

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Good-Perkins has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her accomplishments. She has received The Dean’s Grant for Student Research, The Challenger Grant, the Elin J. Stene fund and Provost Grant from Teacher’s College at Columbia University as well as the Graf Scholarship, the Kopely Scholarship, and the Medici Scholarship associated with Temple University.  This year she will be considered for the Empowered Woman Award and to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. She will be honored at IAOTP’s annual awards gala at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville next December for her selection as Top Music Educator and Owner of the Year.

Ms. Emily Good-Perkins is inspirational, influential, and a true visionary and thought leader. We cannot wait to meet her and celebrate her accomplishments at this year’s gala.”

Looking back, Emily attributes her success to her perseverance, work ethic, and the mentors she has had along the way. When not working, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. In the future, she hopes to inspire and influence those getting into the field.
