OAKLAND, CA – January 10th, 2024 – The Supportive Community Land Alliance (SHCLA), a non-profit community land trust in Oakland, California, is excited to announce its 2023 Micro-Grant Program. This initiative will award up to $5,000 to 16 board and care operators in Alameda County. The grants aim to cover costs related to deferred maintenance and enhance the living conditions for low-income residents with severe mental health issues. SHCLA’s mission is to assist facilities offering vital services to those experiencing homelessness and mental health needs.
In 2022, Alameda County saw the loss of 87 beds in community care facilities for low-income individuals, particularly those with mental health and other disabilities. The loss has significant implications, as homeless hospital patients are more likely to require extended and costly in-patient care.
Founded in 2021 with support from the Alameda County Healthcare Services Agency, SHCLA strives to prevent the closure of licensed residential facilities, establish new ones, and promote a family homeownership model for parents of adult children with severe mental health issues. These board and care homes assist individuals with disabilities in daily activities like grooming, meal preparation, and housekeeping, addressing a crucial community need.
Teslim Ikharo, the first employee and founding executive director of SHCLA, is an urban strategist and community convenor focused on integrating art and design into projects.
