This Houston-based children’s publishing imprint is focusing on the future with books that inspire BIPOC children

Sugar Cookie Books is promoting diversity with a carefully curated line of career-inspiring books for BIPOC  children as Senate Bill 17 officially goes into effect in Texas.

Senate Bill 17 was approved in Spring 2023 with a trajectory for rollout on January 1, 2024. Part of this rollout means that any and all state funded universities must close their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices while also banning diversity training on campus. Supporters of this bill feel that DEI offices and policies are discriminatory.

“Recent legislative shifts highlight the need for innovative approaches to fostering inclusivity in educational environments,” said Tiffany Obeng, founder at Sugar Cookie Books. “In this context, the significance of diverse children’s books becomes even more pronounced, providing a crucial alternative avenue for instilling the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the hearts and minds of the next generation.”

Sugar Cookie Books has launched a steady stream of career books for kids with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People Of Color) children in mind. This list of titles includes “Andrew Learns About Actors”, “Andrew Learns About Teachers”, “Andrew Learns About Lawyers”, “Andrew Learns About Engineers”, and “Andrew Learns About Scientists”. Obeng authored each and also created “I Can Be Anything: A Kid’s Growth Mindset and Confidence Building Journal”.

BIPOC children are more likely to experience negative stereotypes and exclusion in areas such as academia and in media. By instilling diversity into her children’s books, Obeng is empowering a new generation with characters that resonate and narratives that inspire. In a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion have become battlegrounds for politics, Obeng hopes to impart a gentle message: everyone matters, and everyone belongs.
